Weekend Writer’s Block — Adventures in Chiberia

**Disclaimer: massive amounts of writer’s block going on over here. Please excuse what can only be described as a random explosion of my thoughts**

Don’t you hate days when you want to write, but you just can’t come up with the right words? I guess we’ll just have to do what anyone would do in an awkward situation: talk about the weather.

I have never seen such a drastic change in weather conditions.

24 hours ago I was casually running along the Lake Shore path in crops and a vest. And today? This is what we woke up to:

unnamed (32)

Over a foot of snow. And the one thing I learned about living in the neighborhoods now instead of directly downtown? No one shovels anything. The sidewalks were a disaster. But let’s backtrack…

Friday night I went bowling with my college friends. I always go into bowling thinking I’m really good and then I’m lucky if I break 100. It’s that lefty curse, I’ll tell ya.

unnamed (16)

Saturday was “date day” with my mom to round out her birthday week. We spent the afternoon baking cookies and went to our favorite suburban sandwich shop for the best tuna melt in the continental US. This will always be “our spot.”

unnamed (11)

unnamed (23)

I got back to the city around 5pm, but since it was almost spring-like on Saturday and I knew a blizzard was coming, I threw on my running shoes the second I walked into my apartment, turned right around, and knocked out a beautiful 6 miler along the lake.

unnamed (14)

I really went for it, outfit-wise: camo running pants, purple shoes, black vest, orange top. Ridiculous.

Saturday night was spent celebrating Spencer’s birthday. I’m so lucky to have that guy in my life. We’ve been friends since we met on the first day of high school and it really is awesome that we’ve managed to stay close ever since. We went to Headquarters in Lincoln Park, a bar completely dedicated to arcade games, so it was a fun night filled with singing Blink182 in cabs and playing pinball.unnamed (25)

Aaaaand then the Great Blizzard of 2015 hit. Okay, New York, you’ve got nothing on us. It started snowing last night around 8pm and hasn’t stopped since. We were able to catch a cab to our Superbowl shindig but ended up having to walk home afterwards…a not so pleasant experience. It took us an hour to go one mile, most of it spent walking in the street because at least those were semi-plowed. Luckily we were able to laugh about it so we stopped a lot to take silly photos and eat the leftover cookies I brought to the party.

unnamed (22) unnamed (19)unnamed (29)unnamed (21)

Oh, and just because it wouldn’t be Superbowl Weekend without some commercial-talk, here is my favorite ad of the night. I lose it every time the polar bear pops up.

Thank goodness there were still some funny ads  — too many of them made me want to either a) call my dad and tell him I love him or b) never have kids because apparently he or she might get into the chemicals under the sink. I’m all for the emotional but I’m not looking to cry when I’m elbows-deep in some buffalo chicken dip.

Sometimes weekends are a blur, and this was the case the past two days. But one thing I do know is I laughed non-stop. As I’m writing this up my cheeks hurt from all the laughter and smiling the past two days have brought me. I got to do all the things I love: run, eat buffalo chicken dip, watch football AND Katy Perry, celebrate a friend’s birthday, spend time with my family, and bake. Perfect.

And just because this is the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile:

unnamed (9)

Questions:

  • When you have writer’s block, what do you do? Write, or skip a day?
  • Favorite kind of cookie? I made monster cookies for the Superbowl: m&ms, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, oatmeal and rice krispies! They were killer.
  • Best thing you ate at your Superbowl Party? BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

Life Goal: Be The Pioneer Woman

Happy Friday, all! Did this week fly by or what?

Well, you’re in luck. Instead of regularly scheduled programming, where I talk about things I see, do and eat, you get to hear me talk about myself. Aren’t you excited? Big thanks to Anne for nominating me for the Liebster award! I love talking about myself so you made my day (Disclaimer: this writer is not responsible for any and all oblivion to sarcasm).

1. If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

  • Hmmmm…this is tricky. Can I say pizza, because I could then add tons of veggies one day, bbq chicken another, and arugula the next? Or is that cheating?

tumblr_m8a0okvdcU1r0cuoto1_500

2. If you could lunch with any 3 ladies– alive or dead– who would they be?

  • Giada DeLaurentis, Ree Drummund, and Katy Perry. I have a note in my phone that says “Career aspirations: Be The Pioneer Woman.” True Story. I’m kinda going through a phase…

3. What inspired you to begin blogging?

  • I fell in love with food blogs my junior year of college while I was bored at an internship and needed to fill the hours sitting at a computer. I was instantly hooked and knew that once I graduated I wanted to create my own. My first favorites were Kath Eats Real Food, PB Fingers, Sweet Tooth Sweet Life and Hungry Runner Girl. I couldn’t believe you could write about food and fitness all day and call it a hobby.

4. What was your biggest accomplishment of 2014?

  • I got started on my path to having a career in health and fitness! It was tough making the decision to not directly use my degree anymore, especially with how expensive college was. But after a year in public relations I just knew there was something else out there for me that I was truly passionate about, and the second after I ripped off the bandaid, so to speak, my world opened up and I couldn’t be more excited.

5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

  • I change my mind on this every other day. Currently, I would love to live in Los Angeles (and it only has a little to do with the fact that it’s 20 degrees here). I don’t think I want to live there permanently, but I’d love to spend a year or two there. I have this dream in the back of my mind that I move out there by myself, work at lululemon in Santa Monica, run along the beach, hike on the weekends, eat tons of avocados and fish tacos, and finally get a year-round tan on this pale, pale skin of mine. It’ll be my solitary year of sunshine and happiness.

6. Favorite song at the moment?

  • Another toughie. But Spotify doesn’t lie, and the song I’ve been playing the most recently is:

7. Chocolate or vanilla?

  • As much as I love chocolate, when it comes flavored things (cake, ice cream, pudding, milkshakes) it’s definitely vanilla. Chocolate-flavored stuff just never tastes right to me. But give me a vanilla malt and goodness gracious, life is over.

8. What was the best restaurant you visited in 2014?

  • My favorite restaurant was actually back in the beginning of 2014 when I visited Boston. JM Curley — they had the best pulled pork sandwich I’ve ever had and I still sometimes have dreams about it.

img_5594

9. If you could relive any moment in your life, which would you choose?

  • Weird question! I’d have to say, the first semester of college. Is that a moment? Haha. I had never experienced anything like it. I was on my own for the first time, I didn’t know anyone in my dorm, and I just loved that new, exciting feeling. I met my best friends that semester and joined a sorority, which was a ball.

10392010_199930837232_612333_n

10. How did you come up with your blog name?

  • I explain this in my About Me section but here it goes: I was extremely close to my grandma. She lived with us on and off for five or six years throughout my life, so she was very influential for me. She was such a gentle, kind-hearted, quiet woman. Every night at dinner, we would always ask her if she wanted seconds, and she would always say, “No, I had a big lunch.” I mean, she responded this way at least three or four times a week, as if we hadn’t heard it before. It became a running joke in our family. When I was trying to name this blog I kept thinking “Peanut butter-this, healthy-that” and it was all just generic. The idea popped up and the minute I thought of it, that was it. I feel like I fell into the most perfect blog title, as it not only embodies me (most of my meals are pretty big haha) but it pays homage to a woman who meant so much to me growing up.

23748_330931447232_4792370_n

11. Blog goals for 2015?

  • I’m going to make this a much more running-focused blog. I’ve always been “a little bit of this” “a little bit of that” in terms of fitness, and while I think that variety is fun to read about, it’s really important to me that I dedicate myself to running this year and share my journey with you. As you know I’m going to be running my first marathon in October, so I have lots of work to do and lots of first-time experiences to share. I want to do it all as healthy as possible, so it’s important I focus on that throughout 2015. I’d also love to continue to do blogger meet-ups and become a more active member of the Chicago blogging community.

I’m not going to nominate anyone in particular, but I’d love to here your responses to one of the questions above!

WIAW: yep, ANOTHER birthday

If it seems like I’ve said the word “birthday” a lot lately, you’re not crazy. I have a four person family, and our birthdays are all within 40 days of each other (and Christmas). It’s like a birthday bonanza. Let’s just say the wrapping paper comes out once a year and then *sayonara* until next December.WIAW

Yesterday was my beautiful mom’s birthday, so my WIAW is birthday/I’m-home-so-I’m-going-to-raid-my-parents’-fridge-themed. Glorious.

I started the day at Sweat on State for Tabata Tuesday. We did eight 20-second rounds of each exercise which included sprints, kettlebell deadlifts, mountain climbers on a medicine ball, push-ups, weighted lunges, and sit-ups. We had a staff meeting at the store just down the street so a few of us got our sweat on bright and early at 7am, thanks to some great coaching by Erin.

After the staff meeting I was a ravenous monster on my way to the train, so I stopped at my favorite bagel shop for breakfast. I wish I wasn’t so repetitive but yeah, I got another egg sandwich. This one is truly my favorite in the city, though. The Big Z — because nothing is yummier than an everything bagel stuffed with eggs, veggies, and melty cheddar. Get at me!

unnamed (31)

I got home around noon and spent the afternoon working on Community Development for the store. I’ve basically pressed “Snooze” on my responsibilities and initiative on that front after the crazy holiday season, but it’s time to get back to business. I’m excited to see the cool fitness leaders we’ll be getting in the store for demonstrations this upcoming year. While I worked I snacked on “lunch”, or two homemade bran muffins and a sliced banana. Raisins always belong in muffins. Always.

unnamed (32)

See that blank calendar? I have to fill it with community events in our store. As you can see it’s going swimmingly.

The real highlight of the day was dinner. We went to a little Italian restaurant in my hometown that my parents are in love with, and now I see why. Like most dining gems, this place was unassuming at best, hidden between a liquor store and a tattoo parlor in a strip mall. Yeah. But THE FOOD. Never have I ever had vodka sauce so decadent and flavorful.

Chianti + Bruschetta

Rigatoni a la Vodka. I added grilled chicken and spinach. And yes, I ate the whole thing.

The fam + a UFO in the background

We got home and did cake and cards, a ritual that was made even more fun thanks to some Chianti-inspired laughs. unnamed (23)Happy Birthday Maja! Thank you for being the quarterback of our family 🙂 At the end of the day I know I can always count on you for anything. Thank you for being so supportive and kind to me this past year when I was going through tough times. You rallied me through it all! You made our childhood feel like a Disney movie, always playing songs and letting us dance around the house all day, using our imaginations and just being goofy kids. We’re all so lucky to have you.

unnamed (29)Questions:

  • Are your family members’ birthdays close together or far apart?
  • What do you order at Italian restaurants? I used to be an eggplant parmesan fanatic!

Let’s talk about MEATTTT (Tried It Tuesday)

I’m joining in on the fun for the first time this week and participating in Sara’s Tried It Tuesday link-up!

LSR-Tried-it-Tuesday-300x300

I’ve been pulling a Ron Swanson lately and trying to eat more meat than I’ve eaten in years. I’ve pretty much adopted the philosophy that if food looks good, it’s going in my mouth no matter what animal it contains. I don’t know why this is happening but bacon is smelling more delicious with each passing hour, and I can barely go a full workday without dreaming of a ham and cheese panini. So I’m not questioning it and slowly reintroducing different types of meat back in the ol’ diet.

QK5OLcT (1)

BUT, and there’s a big BUT, there are a few caveats to this new-found philosophy:

  1. I still don’t eat beef. Nope, never, nada. It’s not a preference thing, I just have hardly ever eaten it so it doesn’t even cross my mind as food.
  2. Fish + Chicken first. Because they are the kindest to my stomach and the most versatile to cook with
  3. I only buy organic, cage-free poultry without additives. So yes, I spend an obscene…OBSCENE…amount of money on meat for a single 20-something girl. But it’s how I’m able to eat meat — I HAVE to know that what I’m eating doesn’t have any “secrets,” ya feel me?
  4. When I’m out to eat, I rarely eat meat at places that aren’t farm-to-table restaurants. Because if I bite down and I hit anything chewy or suspicious, I’m done. The meal is over. I won’t be able to finish it. What a shame that would be!

So how has this trial period back on the meat wagon been treating me? Rather deliciously, I have to say.

unnamed (13)

That delicious bacon I had on Sunday? It was crunchy, thick-cut and sweet. It took this breakfast to a whole other level. And I know it came from a local farm and was responsibly produced.

IMG_89551

That deli meat I use to make my almost-daily turkey pesto sandwiches that I often just end up eating on the floor? Yeah, it costs me close to $10 a pound. So what? THEY’RE INCREDIBLE. Have you even stuck a turkey sandwich in the microwave for 20 seconds? Have you ever stuck a turkey sandwich with pesto in the microwave for 20 seconds? Have you ever stuck a turkey sandwich with pesto AND CHEESE in the microwave for 20 seconds? Too good.

unnamed (15)

And last, but certainly the BIGGEST accomplishment of my “Tried It Tuesday” adventure was that, for the first time in over a decade, I had sausage. With a runny egg on top.

unnamed (14)I’m not going to lie. This was tough. The flavors were all there and it was a spot-on delicious breakfast sandwich, but my stomach wasn’t happy with its reintroduction to sausage But I trusted that the restaurant uses only quality ingredients in its sausage, no mystery meat, so I took a leap of faith. I don’t think I’ll be doing sausage again for awhile, but BACON, WELCOME BACK INTO MY WORLD. How I’ve missed you 🙂

995617_584632624946962_605907155_nHow long will this meat experimentation last? Who knows. And don’t be surprised if a week from today I’m a freaking vegan (just kidding that would be excessive even for me). But I go through phases of being comfortable with different types of food, so for now I’m just going to blissfully ride the bacon train.

Questions:

  • Are you “weird” about meat?
  • What’s your favorite meat dish?
  • What’s the most interesting meat you’ve ever tried?

A weekend of firsts: “So much room for activities!”

This was a weekend of firsts for me. I didn’t have any big commitments, work, or travel plans, so there was SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!

6b21ef9c17d96b863db2bd496c0e3b799fb5623ea127273544dc5e4511c01337

1) I went to my first concert of 2015. I have a goal (read: not resolution) to see live music once a month for the rest of the year, so now I can check January off the list.unnamed (11)

unnamed (21)Friday night a few friends and I went to see The Way Down Wanderers. I went to college with one of the guys in the band and it was such a blast! Bluegrass meets Folk meets Classical meets Rap. Or something like that.

2) I tried a new Ben & Jerry’s flavor: Americone Dream. It was a tough choice but I managed somehow.

unnamed (9)

(No these aren’t all mine)

3) I saw Dirty Dancing for the first time.

dirty-dancing

I brought…..a watermelon

Never again will I buy that my generation is responsible for the moral downfall of our society with the way we dance. Dirty dancing clearly started ages ago and now my peers are just honoring tradition — our style is just lazier and more monotonous, ending only when the call for 2am pizza is too strong to ignore any longer.

giphy tumblr_lnq4quQrOX1qdk5lp

Although I will admit many late night dance sessions these days don’t end like this:

Dirty-dancing-coverx-large

Believe me I’ve tried.

4) I tried a famous Lincoln Park staple for the first time: Blue Door Farmstand.

unnamed (25)

This place is BOMB.

I also met Sara from Lake Shore Runner for the first time in person! I’ve felt like I’ve known her for so long but it was a relief to meet her and see that she is just as sweet and adorable in person. Susie came too — she’s pretty cool, I guess.

unnamed (24)

Scratch that, extra cool. She knows how to photobomb a latte pic like a champ.

Aside from the firsts, I did some run of the mill activities to balance it all out. A little outdoor running, a little Flywheel, a little yoga sculpt. I think my body is confused over what I’m trying to do to it. I like to think a healthy life is fueled by a steady flow of ice cream AND greens, and so far it’s been going well.

unnamed (10)

Run in the snow — didn’t slip!

5) My first apartment flood

Okay, maybe a little dramatic, but we’re currently dealing with a flooding dining room in the apartment. Thankfully we caught it before it damaged anything but since it’s hardwood floors in a really old building, the people below us are dealing with water leaking from their ceiling and light fixtures. The really stressful part has been that the owner of the building isn’t responding and the “emergency number” is a fluke (great to know in times of an emergency). Luckily we were able to contact a plumber and he’s on his way, but TBD at how this first “adventure” is going to turn out!

Questions:

  • Did you have any “firsts” this weekend?
  • Favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor?

Tango Sur (restaurant review)

Sometimes the best food comes to you when you least expect it.

This was true of my experience at Tango Sur in Lakeview. I knew the Yelp reviews were glowing, but I wasn’t convinced before I went there. I was worried that, as a traditional Argentinian steakhouse, Tango Sur would drop the ball with any dish that wasn’t filet mignon or a lamb plate. Luckily this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The outside of the building is very unassuming. After a few summer walks to the Dairy Queen next door I’ve often seen throngs of people waiting outside for a table, bottles of expensive wine in hand (it’s BYOB). The restaurant itself has two very intimate, small rooms, seating only about 50 people at a time, so you can almost always expect a wait. (Luckily I asked and found out that they have a “waiting room” in the winter for people to pass the time — I couldn’t imagine people in parkas waiting outside for the food in mid-January, no matter HOW good it is).

v1v1 (1)

The second thing I noticed about Tango Sur is the lighting. It is pitch black inside. Not dim, black. The only light comes from long-stemmed white candles in the middle of each table. It’s incredibly romantic and quite the fire hazard, a charming combination to say the least.

I went with my family and, at the suggestion of the host, we arrived at 5:30 just before the crowds started making their way over for dinner. We were seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant, lively Argentinian music filling the room at just the right volume: loud enough that if someone began to dance it wouldn’t have been out of place, but soft enough that we could still have a conversation.

Our waiter was a sweetheart — he couldn’t have been more than 20 years old and knew the menu backwards and forwards. He immediately offered us an ice bucket for the bottle of Pinot Grigio that we brought, a thoughtful gesture.

unnamed (11)

As we browsed the menu and sipped our wine, we picked an easy appetizer that we knew would satisfy the table: Pravaleta.

Argentine provolone cheese cooked on the grill with olive oil and roasted red pepper.

Argentine provolone cheese cooked on the grill with olive oil and roasted red pepper.

We’ve talked about this before but it’s worth another mention: you can’t go wrong with a plate of cheese. The best part, in my opinion, was the roasted red pepper, which I made sure to get a little of with every bite.

My dad also ordered a ham and cheese empanada, which they get from Mercado Meat Mart, the small, authentic Latin American grocery store next door.

unnamed (14)

Not being a huge empanada person, I passed on trying this, but my dad certainly liked it. Plus everything is better when it comes in mini-size.

Our entrees were the real stars of the show. First, both my dad and brother got “El Filet”, range-grown fillet mignon, cooked on the grill then topped with a red onion wine sauce.

unnamed (15)

Now, I don’t eat red meat, so I don’t know a good steak from a bad one, but the guys were raving about their dishes. The portions were HUGE (they got two pieces of meat and ended up taking one home — talk about bang for your buck) and they said the meat was delicious and tender. So it was a win for them!

My mom ended up ordering the shrimp appetizer as her entree, which she wasn’t over the moon about but still enjoyed. I didn’t snap a photo because I was too busy drooling over my dish, which was a) made for an NBA player to consume and b) was so insanely delicious that I’m salivating just writing about it: Suprema a la Napolitana.

Chicken breast, breaded and topped with baked ham, mozzarella and tomato sauce

Chicken breast, breaded and topped with baked ham, mozzarella and tomato sauce

YOU GUYS. It was mind-blowing. Breathtaking. One of those foods you want to stop eating because you know physically your stomach can’t expand any more but your tongue keeps saying more! more! moreeeee! Needless to say, I ended up taking over half home, as my body was already succumbing to the plate of cheese that I ate just minutes before. But it. was. incredible.

unnamed (19)

We ended the meal a whole 10 pounds heavier and so satisfied, with absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Sure, it took awhile for our food to come out, but you have to wait for greatness, am I right? Plus, we had two bottles of wine and plenty of great conversation to fill those minutes. My mom, being a mom, told the waiter that it was our birthday, so they even came out with two plates of flan for my brother and me. It was so unexpected and unnecessary, but such a wonderful touch at the end. Not to mention that the flan was served with a homemade caramel sauce on the side that I would sacrifice my firstborn child to taste again.

All that being said, we had two bottles of wine, an appetizer, four entrees (including two orders of filet mignon) and dessert for under $120. In Chicago. It felt like we were stealing as we walked out.

All I can say is THANK GOD Tango Sur is a five minute walk from my apartment. Now to make friends who will willingly fork over good money to eat Argentinan food instead of get $5 slices of pizza…#roughlife

Questions:

  • Have you ever tried Argentinian food?
  • Do you have friends who are open to trying new types of food with you?

WIAW: Photo Dump Cuz I Said So

Today is going to be a post of few words, and more pictures. You know what they say, “Open your mouth only if what you’re about to say is more beautiful than silence.” I’m not sure if “they” say it, but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t come up with words more beautiful than photos of food, amiright?

WIAW

So today I’m settling for a photo dump of all my eats recently. I’m trying so, so, so hard to turn down dinner invitations and happy hours (but you’ll also notice I’m making no qualms about going out to lunch. Shut up about it). That’s not to say I’m not going out at all but my wallet wasn’t too happy with the amount I was going out to eat and drink during the week as of late. But hey, my workout game has been on point so I’m not crying about it.

Sick Days, Dad Dates, and Farmhouse

Hey team! I’m writing to you from the horizontal position on my couch that I’ve maintained for the past eight hours.

im-sick

Sickness is a funny thing…sometimes you feel it coming on and, like a wave, it passes mildly, but other times, *WHAM*, out of nowhere, it feels like Clay Matthews came at you out of your blind spot and you’re out of commission for awhile. I’m so lucky that my home in the suburbs is less than an hour away so that, during times like this, I can come home, act like a baby, and be taken care of. My day has mostly revolved around soup, m&ms (for my mental health, of course), and Buzzfeed.

unnamed (23)

Speaking of which, I found a pretty cool article you might find helpful!

24 Diagrams to Help You Eat Healthierenhanced-26575-1420833073-9My favorite diagram is the one about nuts — now I know I can eat allllll the pistachios.

Before The Plague of January 2015 came on, I had a pretty awesome Saturday spent with my dad. After I got off work he came to the city and we made a night of it. If you’ve ever read my About Me section, my high school life revolved around basketball, and it was my true love for quite awhile. I even considered playing in college but decided I wanted to go to Illinois, a D1 school, and that was never gonna happen haha. But my dad was always my #1 fan, always at all my games. Anyway, we used to go watch women’s basketball games at Northwestern, and since it’s been a few years we decided to bring back the old tradition and go see a game.

unnamed (11)

It was so much fun to be back at Welsh-Ryan arena with my dad, especially because the Wildcats played Michigan (our #1 team). Funny how I used to be terrified of college athletes but now that I’m post-grad, the players all looked so small! Perspective is a funny thing.

unnamed (12)After the game we went to dinner at Farmhouse, a farm-to-table restaurant that focuses on seasonal, local food. We sat at the bar and had a few drinks and appetizers before placing our dinner order. It was a beautiful space!

unnamed (13)Their drink list is interesting — they don’t carry any commercial brands (you should have seen the look of surprise on my dad’s face when he asked for Bombay Sapphire gin and was instantly shut down). I asked for the closest draft to my beloved Stella and the bartender gave me a few samples before I settled on a wheat ale (I really wish I could remember what it was! Blogger fail).

After consulting Yelp, we knew we had to start with their famous cheese curds

unnamed (21)

Beer Battered Wisconsin Cheese Curds with homemade ketchup and spicy curd sauce.

Now, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad plate of fried cheese, but these were definitely special. The sauces were both homemade and you could tell the curds were as fresh as possible. Each and every one was well-sized and stuffed with cheese — no extra breading at all. We both loved them.

And for our entrees Dad and I got the same thing — the Indiana Fish Fry.

unnamed (22)

Beer battered yellow perch, tartar slaw, mustard seed gatstrique, and tavern-cut fries

There’s usually nothing special about fish and chips. It can be great no matter what — all you need is a little lemon and tons of ketchup or tartar sauce and you’re golden. But the special thing about this was the entree as a whole: when you combined the fresh fish, slaw and mustard seed gastrique all in one bite is was absolutely perfect. I could have swam in a pool full of that gastrique. The bartender said it was sweetened malt vinegar and mustard seeds. I would love to meet the person who created that — I love restaurants that take care to make sure all the elements of a dish come together to make one spectacular eating experience. It was like a math equation: fish + slaw + gastrique = perfection. Now that’s math I can understand.

So even though I spent half the weekend horizontal on my couch, it was a great one. Great time spent with my dad and wonderful food. Now I’m spending my Sunday night with some of my favorite ladies…

Friday Favorites: trivia crack, Shred415, and the power of failure

Favorite Song: “I Will Follow You” by Rivvrs

I can’t stop playing this song! It’s been my go-to lately, whether I’m checking email, studying, or just walking to the train. IMO, music is one of the few keys to true happiness. I always have music on — when I’m making breakfast, taking a shower, writing, whatever. Never underestimate the power of music to alter the course of your day. I don’t care if it’s Pearl Jam, Avril Lavigne or Toby Keith — just get your jam on. This has been one of my favorites to run to lately:

Yes it’s a British boy band. No their music isn’t available on Spotify. And yes I’ve been pretty salty about it. But the tempo is perfect for a run so if you don’t mind having YouTube open while you sprint away, by all means.

Favorite News: Pizza update! (always crucial)

Giordano’s in the Loop is offering a “Cubby Special” this weekend. All you have to do is ask, and this beauty will be set before you. Now to find a dinner date…

Favorite Workout: Shred415

ShredSQ

I know I’ve said this to you guys about sixteen times recently, but I haven’t worked out harder than I did at Shred in a long, long time. The main idea behind Shred is to combine cardio and weight training in one hour of hard work. No two days are the same. Some days you alternate running and core work in 10 minute increments. Other days you run for 30 minutes and work on weight training for the last half an hour. Oftentimes it’s divided into four 15 minute pieces. Every workout surprises your body with new moves and challenges, and I love the balance between cardio and weight training. Gideon, one of the instructors there and a great friend of our lululemon store, led class and between sprints and core work I left drenched in sweat, my muscles shaking, and with an insatiable hunger. So much so that I shoveled an entire avocado in my mouth as soon as I got home. Skin not included, of course, but it was dicey there for a minute.

If you have ClassPass or are looking for a new way to workout in Chicago, please please please go check out the kind folks are Shred415! And if you want me to join you for a class (or any class, for that matter), shoot me an email! I’m always down to sweat.

Favorite Show: About a Boy

I discovered About a Boy just a week ago, but because there are only two seasons out so far, I’ve already started to re-watch both seasons and plan on doing so until I get sick of the same 24 episodes. It’s just the cutest.

Valuable knowledge, my friends. If you need me I’ll be locked in my room snacking on some shortbread and champagne.

Favorite Pastime: Trivia Crack

Spencer introduced me to the most addictive game ever. We even played it last weekend at his apartment while sitting next to each other on the couch. No conversation necessary, just straight up trivia. Thanks to this game I now know the uniform colors of the Miami Dolphins, the ins and outs of podiatry, and why Zeus punished Prometheus by chaining him to a rock in Greek mythology. THIS is the stuff I should have been learning in high school!Trivia-Crack-Feature

Favorite Video: The Power of Failure

This video really hit home for me. Failure is one of our greatest friends. Failure naturally builds humility, self-examination and self-realization. Failure equals new possibilities in life that you didn’t expect. What do you think?

HAVE A KICK-ASS WEEKEND!

  • Have you tried Shred415?
  • Do you play Trivia Crack?
  • What do you take away from the video about The Power of Failure?

What I Ate Wednesday: back in business

The past two days have been “stock up on food and quit spending money at restaurants” central.

Haha good joke — I’ll keep spending money at restaurants but a girl can dream of a world where her kitchen is better than a restaurant, right?

unnamed (46)unnamed (47)

Highlights included:

  • Vegetables: peppers, onions, celery, carrots, tomatoes, sugar snap peas, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, avocado
  • Fruit: kiwi, apples, bananas, grapes
  • Frozen: spinach, Morningstar veggie sausage, shrimp, whole wheat bread and English muffins (I keep them in the freezer because I don’t go through them very fast)
  • Fridge: eggs, coffee creamer, minced garlic, salsa, Chobani 4% plain yogurt, Chobani key lime and coconut yogurt, raspberry jam, turkey deli meat
  • Pantry: peanut butter, black beans, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, Parma Rosa sauce mix, whole grain tortilla chips
  • Spices: cinnamon, bay leaves, paprika, tabasco sauce

Is my grocery haul usually this big? Nope. But by some grace of God I ran out of staples like peanut butter, jelly, creamer, eggs, etc. all at the same time. So it was quite the loot! But my eats recently have benefited from all the effort I gave at the grocery store.

And with that, my first WIAW in…..what, four months? Not cool! So let’s walk through my Tuesday eats.

WIAW

I woke up and had half a cup of coffee with half and half and stevia. My body and brain just can’t handle a full cup of coffee anymore!

Breakfast

After seeing what Kathie Lee and Hoda were up to and answering some emails/working on blog stuff, I started on breakfast.

unnamed (48)

Egg sandwich: 1 egg, a few egg whites, onion powder, red pepper flakes, spinach and Parmesan cheese, plus a piece of veggie sausage and raspberry jam. SO GOOD.

I headed to work early to do a little shopping and add to my rapidly expanding lululemon collection. Hey, when you work there, it not only becomes justifiable, but necessary. I put together my lunch and snacks before I left because I knew I wouldn’t be home until around 10pm — food prep is so helpful to not only stay on track, but also to keep myself from eating out.

My break came at around 4pm, so a little later than usual. I snacked on some unpictured almonds while I worked and then finally it was “lunch” time (when I work the closing shift my day is pushed back a lot, so my breakfast usually is around 10 or 11, snack around 2 and then lunch around 4).

Lunch was what I like to call a “snack pack”:

unnamed (49)

4% plain Chobani with grapes and stevia, a mini Luna bar, some carrots and sugar snap peas and a kiwi. I also packed some Skoop protein + almond milk but completely forgot about it.

As soon as work was over I scrambled to take a Hot Power Fusion yoga class at Corepower Yoga with my roommate, Colleen. I didn’t get a picture of the before, during or after (which, to be honest, is probably best, seeing as we were both sloppy messes by the time the class was over), but I’ll share a few photos from my Monday workout instead. I woke up bright and early to attend Sweat on State, where we got our sprints, ball slams, and triceps push-ups on. KILL ME NOW. My triceps still hate me from that workout.unnamed (52)

unnamed (45)

The instructor was able to catch me mid-triceps push-up. I wish you could see my face here because it was pure agony.

I finished in just under 25 minutes. Normally I would never think 25 minutes is enough. But I literally lay on the floor after that workout in so much pain and I couldn’t wait to get back home and crawl into bed. Sometimes, 25 minutes of pushing yourself to the max is enough. I love Sweat on State more and more each time I go — I’m starting to build a great fitness family there and really appreciate not only the intensity and variety of the workouts, but the sense of community that exists there.

unnamed (44)

Flashforward to yesterday’s workout — Colleen and I ended up getting home around 10pm, and just as I imagined, I was famished. I made the quickest, most appealing dinner I could think of:

unnamed (50)

Whole wheat toast with tonnnnns of peanut butter, sliced banana and cinnamon

Now it’s late and this Cinderella needs to get to sleep before the clock strikes 12. I’m about to grab a few handfuls of chocolate chips, some carrots and a cheese stick (because I’m always hungry), and head to bed. It was quite the full day and I’m ready for some zzzzs.

Questions:

  • What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
  • What was the laziest meal you’ve made lately?
