Weekend Writer’s Block — Adventures in Chiberia

**Disclaimer: massive amounts of writer’s block going on over here. Please excuse what can only be described as a random explosion of my thoughts**

Don’t you hate days when you want to write, but you just can’t come up with the right words? I guess we’ll just have to do what anyone would do in an awkward situation: talk about the weather.

I have never seen such a drastic change in weather conditions.

24 hours ago I was casually running along the Lake Shore path in crops and a vest. And today? This is what we woke up to:

Over a foot of snow. And the one thing I learned about living in the neighborhoods now instead of directly downtown? No one shovels anything. The sidewalks were a disaster. But let’s backtrack…

Friday night I went bowling with my college friends. I always go into bowling thinking I’m really good and then I’m lucky if I break 100. It’s that lefty curse, I’ll tell ya.

Saturday was “date day” with my mom to round out her birthday week. We spent the afternoon baking cookies and went to our favorite suburban sandwich shop for the best tuna melt in the continental US. This will always be “our spot.”

I got back to the city around 5pm, but since it was almost spring-like on Saturday and I knew a blizzard was coming, I threw on my running shoes the second I walked into my apartment, turned right around, and knocked out a beautiful 6 miler along the lake.

I really went for it, outfit-wise: camo running pants, purple shoes, black vest, orange top. Ridiculous.

Saturday night was spent celebrating Spencer’s birthday. I’m so lucky to have that guy in my life. We’ve been friends since we met on the first day of high school and it really is awesome that we’ve managed to stay close ever since. We went to Headquarters in Lincoln Park, a bar completely dedicated to arcade games, so it was a fun night filled with singing Blink182 in cabs and playing pinball.unnamed (25)

Aaaaand then the Great Blizzard of 2015 hit. Okay, New York, you’ve got nothing on us. It started snowing last night around 8pm and hasn’t stopped since. We were able to catch a cab to our Superbowl shindig but ended up having to walk home afterwards…a not so pleasant experience. It took us an hour to go one mile, most of it spent walking in the street because at least those were semi-plowed. Luckily we were able to laugh about it so we stopped a lot to take silly photos and eat the leftover cookies I brought to the party.

Oh, and just because it wouldn’t be Superbowl Weekend without some commercial-talk, here is my favorite ad of the night. I lose it every time the polar bear pops up.

Thank goodness there were still some funny ads  — too many of them made me want to either a) call my dad and tell him I love him or b) never have kids because apparently he or she might get into the chemicals under the sink. I’m all for the emotional but I’m not looking to cry when I’m elbows-deep in some buffalo chicken dip.

Sometimes weekends are a blur, and this was the case the past two days. But one thing I do know is I laughed non-stop. As I’m writing this up my cheeks hurt from all the laughter and smiling the past two days have brought me. I got to do all the things I love: run, eat buffalo chicken dip, watch football AND Katy Perry, celebrate a friend’s birthday, spend time with my family, and bake. Perfect.

And just because this is the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile:

Questions:

  • When you have writer’s block, what do you do? Write, or skip a day?
  • Favorite kind of cookie? I made monster cookies for the Superbowl: m&ms, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, oatmeal and rice krispies! They were killer.
  • Best thing you ate at your Superbowl Party? BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP

  1. I really think my hospital here in Kuwait would give that restaurant a run for their money in the tuna melt department. I know your probably thinking a hospital? It’s true though! It’s the jam & I eat it every time I go there… even visits where I’m not there having a procedure or giving birth.

  2. I always find myself writing about the weather when i can’t think of anything else to say! But I think you have good reason to talk about the weather- that snow looks intense!
My favorite cookie is chocolate chip, sometimes with peanut butter added. My husband already bought fresh chocolate chip cookies yesterday for when the Whole30 is over Wednesday…ya think he’s a little ready for this to be over?

  3. When I have Writer’s Block, I look at my phone pictures and reminisce old memories and post about them! 🙂

And I know what you mean by drastic weather change–I am looking forward to all the snow though, even though that means I can’t run outside.

    1. I do that too, actually! I go through my phone, look at my pics, and say, “how can I piece this all together??” haha. And not being able to run outside is the worst part of the snow — the rest of it is pretty beautiful.

  4. I’m right there with you for the weather. writer’s block wise–the struggle is real for all of us!
That quote at the end. BUAHAHAHAHAHA I DIE.
I”m just glad that I got my long run in on Saturday. I bet some people got a pretty rude awakening Sunday.

  5. Hey girl!! Happy Monday!! Sounds like a fantastic weekend for you! Yay to laughing and smiling so much that your face hurts! I love it! And WOW to the snow!! Um, that’s A LOT of snow! 🙂 You looked fabulous buried in it (up to your knees)! Love that pic! So fun! Also, love the bowling shoe pic! Too cute! Favorite cookie? Chocolate chip cookies!! XOXO

  6. Yay for fun weekends! David and I have just woken up after the Super Bowl last night – such a late night but so worth it! And now I get the whole of today with him to chill out! Yay!
That snow… Reminds me of when I lived in the north of Scotland – we got that a lot! Now I am in glasgow we don’t really get any significant snow. But that’s ok, I feel like I had my childhood with snow and now I can take or leave it!

  7. Aside from the snow, that looks like a super fun weekend! At least you had cookies.

If I get writer’s block I usually skip a day or just step away for a little bit. Something usually comes to me eventually, and it all else fails just post puppy pics.

  8. Dang… all the snow!!! It’s snowing here in Tennessee, aka there are little white flakes falling from the sky and not sticking or anything. That’s normally how we roll here.

If I have writer’s block, I just wait it out. I used to try and force a post, but it never turned out good and it felt/read forced. It’ll clear up!

    I’m 6’2″ and I have a thing for shorter girls. I see them. =)

  9. Those cookies sound legit!!!! I know used a lot of exclamation marks, and I stand by that decision 😉 We’re getting hit by Linus today. I’m still working up the courage and strength to go shovel.

  10. Yeah man that snow was rough. My boots are also not waterproof = no bueno. Idk what was up w all the commercials last night, but I cried at an unreasonable number of them. Weird.

Glad you made it home yesterday! Whenever I have writer’s block I usually just skip a day if I know it’s going to be mindless babbling (which is not what yours was! I’m not implying that haha). Just what I do.

  11. YUM!! Looks tasty! …and oh my word right?!! It seriously needs to stop snowing!! …can it please be Spring yet?!!! 🙂

  12. I love this post! HAHAHA the picture at the end of the post! As a 5’7 girl, I can definitely relate 😉
I said the same thing last night about wanting to call my dad after seeing all those commercials, so I did 🙂
Monster cookies are one of my favorites! I feel like a lot of people don’t know what they are, but they’re SO good! I’ve actually never put Rice Krispies in mine before, though.

  13. I thought I was the only one who was like severely damaged by the commercial with the kids and chemicals and all the way that your kids could accidentally die. That was just morbid and I get that they were trying to stand out in a sea of really good commercials… but I think it was tasteless.
Anyway, looks like you had a fantastic and busy weekend. Hope the snow treats you ok. It’s been pretty nuts here too since about 2pm yesterday afternoon. I think I’m ready for this to be over!

  14. hahaha that height quote is hilarious. so i had a staycation here in NYC w/ one of my girlfriends at this sick apt she’s watching this past weekend, and she just moved here from Chicago a year ago and everyone there was texing her about all the snow you guys got — and we didn’t get it til today! i’m glad it missed us this wknd but it’s a disaster here right now! stay warm!

  15. Buffalo chicken dip is my favorite. I wish I had a party to go to so I couldve made it. I instead stayed home by myself and made guacamole. I loved the lab and the doritos commercial. Wow you guys really got a ton of snow. Luckily we haven’t had too much this year but February is just starting.

  16. That avocado commercial killeeedddd me haha! and I love that 5’1″/6’4″ thing lol. Your weekend seemed very fun and I’m glad I got to spend some time with you on Friday!!! I can’t believe you were out in the snow last night lol you are so brave!!!!

  17. I hate that kind of writer’s block! We’ve been promised a “great blizzard” where I live, only we’ve gotten about 3 total inches. I think you have our snow 😉

  18. Love that you guys went to AH bowling alley. Havent been there since HS but it brings back memories : ) So jealous that you city folk could get out for superbowl. In the burbs, everything shuts down during storms because we need our cars. Man, I need to move into the city!

  19. Oh goodness, the polar bear…I enjoyed that commercial! I also found the Snickers commercial near the beginning with the Brady Bunch in it to be hilarious for some reason. Jeez that’s a lot of snow. But you did manage to be so matchy-matchy with your friend, Spencer! Two thumbs up! I love having good friends like that in life. It makes surviving through a blizzard THAT much better. I kinda feel like I have writer’s block or communication block today too, so excuse the randomness with that comment.

  20. Oh we got SO MUCH SNOW today! It’s still going! Wiping off my car was super fun today…and then digging it out with my boot was even more fun…but I did it! When I have writer’s block I go on a random rant, that gets the juices flowing 😉
My favorite cookie store bought is an Oreo. If I make it I love no bake three ingredient cookies. Just dates, walnuts and chocolate chips.
I went to a non-superbowl party and ate sushi!

  21. I can’t believe how much snow you got! I was smiling looking at your pictures, because I could totally see myself acting like that while trying to not freeze my hiney off! When I get writer’s block, I start talking to myself (more than usual I guess), and I shut my computer and stop thinking about it. Eventually something comes to me! I love all cookies, but those Monster creations you made sound to die for! A little bite of everything!

    1. That’s the perfect description — “a little bit of everything”. I had to bring the rest to work yesterday because they were just too good. I’m just gonna say it…writer’s block is a bitch. But it happens to everyone I suppose 😉
