Happy October, everyone! I hope you’re all ready for the best month of the year!

Image

In honor of this month, I’m thinking the following activities are in order:

  • Pumpkin carving/decorating. Thanks to Pinterest, I think I’m going to paint mine this year. I’m thinking a chevron design!Image
  • Run through a forest preserve while the leaves change

Image

  • Scary movie nights…complete with candy corn and peanut binges

Image

  • Visit an apple orchard (don’t be fooled again…apple butter is not good)

Image

  • Homecoming celebration back on campus

Image

  • Picking out the best Halloween costume (last year I went as a “cereal” killer. This foodie title ain’t no joke)

Image

  • Haunted boat tour along the Chicago River or a Gangster City Tour throughout downtown (both seem fun for Fall)

Image

  • Haunted house.  Just kidding. You couldn’t pay me to go in one of those.

What’s YOUR favorite thing to do in October?

Yolk (brunch review)

As you may or may not know, I’m a breakfast gal.

I could eat breakfast all day everyday.  Omelets make me swoon, hashbrowns throw me into a frenzy, and don’t even get me started on a good stack of banana pancakes.

Since I now spend almost every weekend in the city, it has become a tradition to spend Sunday mornings after church with friends getting brunch.

A little story: brunch used to be one of my biggest pet peeves. Yes, right up there with loud chewers and heavy breathers, was brunch.  Why would I want to put two meals into one? Doesn’t that mean less food, less time to eat, less of an experience?

Then I turned 20 and realized I’m a suburban white girl: loving brunch is in my blood.

Brunch is an experience. You eat slower, sip on never ending cups of coffee, and don’t have to rush off to the next thing because guess what, you’re at brunch. Everything that’s important is happening all around you and the people who matter that day are eating brunch with you. Love it.

This past Sunday I was fortunate enough to grab a table at Yolk, one of the most well-known breakfast/brunch spots in Chicago.

Image

Yeah, the wait was pretty long! I sat out in the sun waiting for Megan to arrive from Lakeview.  I had to wait about 45 minutes which really wasn’t bad considering the amount of people both inside and outside the restaurant.  That place is really good at moving tables and getting people in.

Megan arrived just in time for us to be seated (which is good because Yolk doesn’t seat incomplete parties).  I had requested to sit outside, and it ended up being totally worth the wait.

ImageBeing in the loop downtown means that you spend 75% of your time in the shade, which isn’t a bad deal! We got to experience the nice weather (70s) but not have the sun beating down our backs. It was a gorgeous afternoon.

We sat down and quickly perused the menu. There were about a million options, as there always are at places like this.  Even though I always end up getting eggs, I curiously looked through the rest of the menu.  Highlights included:

  • Bacon and egg quesadilla: Hickory smoked bacon, scrambled eggs, and green onions ROLLED in a white flatbread with cheddar and jack cheeses. Served with salsa, sour cream, and red diced potatoes or fresh fruit.
  • Margherita frittata: tomatoes, fresh basil, and garlic scrambled with red diced potatoes. topped with fresh mozzarella and baked. Served with a side of marinara sauce.
  • Banana-blue crunch cakes: Our multigrain batter loaded with granola and fresh blueberries…topped with bananas and drizzled with honey.
  • Banana’s Foster crepes: Our crepes stuffed with bananas sautéed in butter, Crème de Banana, and brown sugar. topped with whipped cream and pecans.
  • Tour de France French Toast: A sample of our 3 special breads, french toasted. Banana Nut topped with bananas, Sweet Orange topped with strawberries, and lemon Poppy Seed topped with blueberries.

The choices were nuts.  Of course I got overwhelmed and just went with a classic omelet, served with whole wheat bread and potatoes.

ImageEverything was perfect. The only complaint that I have is that there is no way that was whole wheat bread.  Whole grain, definitely, but not whole wheat.  Silly waitress you can’t fool me.

My omelet was filled with cheddar cheese, onions, green peppers, and tomatoes.

The omelet was so so so great. I wish I could add another “so” to that description but excessiveness like that might seem like I’m exaggerating. I am not. I didn’t even need to use ketchup! Not once! That’s when you know the eggs/potatoes are good.

I ate almost the whole plate, and even the leftovers were eaten three hours later.  Megan was really happy with her scrambler too (it had pesto, potatoes, and over-easy eggs).

We enjoyed our time there for almost two hours, sipping on coffee mugs that were constantly being refilled (even if you didn’t want it to be haha).

A few small complaints about Yolk: the food is worth any trivial errors, but it’s worth mentioning the bad as well as the good. The service was definitely lacking. From the second we sat down Megan and I felt rushed to no end. It was one of those “No, I’m sorry I don’t know what I want to order yet I sat down 45 seconds ago” situations.  Our waitress didn’t smile, tell us her name, or welcome us in any way. To be honest when you’re out with your best friend that’s not the end of the world but as a waitress myself I definitely notice things like that. Also, she kept filling our coffee cups while still practically moving, spilling coffee down the sides of the mug and on the table.  Totally unacceptable and really distracting.  Luckily it made for funny conversation and Megan and I were able to slow down once we placed our order. I understand busy places like Yolk wanting to turn tables fast in order to get a lot of business, but we definitely weren’t about to rush out of there and not enjoy our time.  So once we had our food we ate slowly, sipped on our coffee, and just talked about life for awhile.  It was a wonderful time, out there on the patio, and our waitress even seemed to become friendlier as the meal went on. I’ll chalk it up to coming in at a stressful moment for her, but still not an excuse.

Overall, I would absolutely come back to Yolk.  They have three locations in the city which makes it very convenient, and you can’t deny how great the food is: they’ve been featured in multiple Chicago magazines, voted a few times as #1 breakfast in the city, and get praised constantly on Yelp.  If you have an extra hour to wait one morning and are in the city, definitely make your way to the nearest Yolk.  You won’t be disappointed!

It’s officially the first Friday of Fall!  Can I just tell you how excited I am?!  Even though the weatherman says it’s supposed to hit 80 on Saturday, I’m still going to enjoy the outdoors and keep my fingers crossed that we’ll get some crisp and chilly weather instead.

I have big plans this weekend: hanging out with friends, watching some flag football, brunch on Sunday, and date night! It makes working hard throughout the week so worth it.  So, to go along with how generally WIRED and HAPPY I am right now, here are some things I currently loving.

Music

I dare you to play this song when you wake up in the morning and not dance alone in your bedroom or hum it in the shower. Pure happiness.

This is the kind of song that stays in my head all day.  I guarantee that I’ll be doing this on the train later today, singing this song in my head:

jane-dance

White girl dancing FTW.

Show

This is easily one of the funniest shows on television. The only show that’s funnier?

Only if you like dirty humor though. This isn’t a show you watch with grandma.

Eats

IMG_2980

After falling off the sandwich wagon for a week or so I made this delicious creation yesterday. Tuna mixed with TJ’s pesto on Ezekiel whole grain bread (plus veggies).

IMG_2841

Please excuse the blur and take in the beauty that is candy corn and peanuts. I suppose this is a bit of a lie because I haven’t actually bought these yet, but they are definitely on my mind today and I think now that fall is officially here, I’ll have to buy them this week. (If you haven’t tried this combo, trust me it’s amazing. Make sure you get really salty peanuts though!)

I swear by these two Neutrogena products. Two because if I use the scrub too many days in a row it dries out my skin and totally defeats the purpose haha.  I had to wait for my prescription at Walmart the other day so of course I bought things I didn’t technically need. We’ll see how this shiny dark green nail polish turns out!

  • Have you ever had candy corn and peanuts?
  • What’s your favorite picture from the National Geographic gallery? I’d have to say mine is either the cowgirl or the Afghan girl. I can see why that cover has won awards!

doctors and smoothies (recipe)

what do these two things have in common? nothing, except both made appearances in my life yesterday!

After my workout yesterday I had to fast because I knew I’d be getting blood work done at the doctor. Pure misery, I tell you.  My body does not do well not eating for 5+ hours. I am the epitome of “hangry” (just ask Zman–he’s often the victim of my hangry wrath).

However, I knew if I wanted to get to the bottom of why I was feeling so crappy, I had to go to the doctor.

ImageSelfies at the doctor so, yeah, that’s a new low… 🙂

Image

After a series of blood tests, my yearly physical, and getting a flu shot (yay killing three birds with one stone) I was ready to eat the cotton balls sitting on my doctor’s desk.  However, self-control and societal norms kept me from doing this and I was out of there pretty fast.

Funny story…when I was younger I used to HATE getting my blood taken. I’m talking cry-in-the-chair and scream-for-my-mom type hate. Nowadays I’m the weirdo who likes to watch the whole time! Call me crazy but I think the body is so cool and I love watching medical stuff like that. The nurse even said I may have missed my calling 😉 Eh I think there’s a big difference between watching my skin get pricked and being able to handle things like other people’s bodily fluids and open wounds. Just saying.

The diagnosis? Migraine.

Image

I’ve always thought migraines were fake. Is that mean? I don’t know but I’ve always had people in class or at work complain of a “migraine” and ask to go home or not perform work that they are supposed to do.  Luckily I have medication now that has helped tremendously and I feel so much better already after just one day! I promise I’ll never be “that person” who uses migraines as an excuse to get out of work, but I will definitely think twice before judging someone who complains of one. These are no joke!

I sped out of the doctor’s office and went straight to my favorite sandwich shop just a few miles down the road.

Image

“Vegetarian Special”: 6 grain bread, swiss cheese, light herb mayo, lettuce, sprouts, tomato and red onion.

I ate that sandwich along with a bowl of cheerios in a total of about 5 minutes. Then I became human again and all was right in the world.

Image

Anyway, while the medicine helped, it killed my appetite for the rest of the day so I stuck with smoothies for the remainder of my meals.  A lack of produce at my house called for some creativity and I came up with a great new smoothie recipe!

Orange Mango Smoothie

  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 6oz container of plain greek yogurt, sweetened with truvia (sweetener is optional)
  • 1-1.5 cup(s) frozen mango chunks
  • Badass glass to drink from

The result?

Image

I felt like I was on a tropical island.

Happy Thursday! Have a great afternoon 🙂

Questions:

  • Have you ever had a migraine?
  • What’s your favorite kind of smoothie? I’d love some inspiration!

WIAW

Hey all! Sorry for the absence yesterday but I’ve been feeling a little under the weather so I basically took the day off from existing yesterday (hello, naps all day).

When I get sick my appetite gets all out of whack, which I’m sure happens to a lot of you.  I always crave really simple foods: bread, peanut butter, cereal, crackers, etc. It’s not the best, but I made it work.

So today for my “What I Ate Wednesday”, here are my eats (otherwise known as my “under the weather” eats)

Breakfast

ImageEzekiel whole grain english muffin with pb&j. So simple but it always hits the spot.

Lunch

Image

La Tortilla Factory whole wheat tortilla stuffed with cheese, black beans, peppers and onions. Enchilada sauce on the side.

Dinner

Image

Veggie chili served on top of sauteed green beans and onions. Topped with pepperjack cheese , tomatoes, and jalepenos.

That chili was not a great idea for dinner so I only had a small bowl and then dug into my Kashi cereal for something a little simpler to make my stomach happier.  Sometimes it’s better to go with your gut (literally) instead of trying to jam veggies/protein in your diet when your body just isn’t feeling it.

Snack

ImageRoasted sweet potato topped with cinnamon, truvia, and natural chunky pb

(the pb looks weird because natural pb is kept in the fridge)

Am I the only person who regularly eats sweet potatoes for snacks or as part of a meal? As long as you think ahead of time (roasting it takes about an hour) it’s a really easy, naturally sweet snack that, topped with peanut butter, keeps me full.  While this was a snack so I wanted to include some protein, I really do love sweet potatoes plain or with just a little cinnamon.  They’re so naturally sweet!

I got to bed early last night in hopes of fighting off this sickness but woke up early to go to bootcamp at 6 am. Surprise, surprise, I got home and I was still sick (and I’m sure the intense workout didn’t help. I’m heading to the doctor now).  Today was a doozy.  Why am I still surprised by this? Bootcamp is ALWAYS a doozy.  But that’s what makes it so fun! It’s always a tough, heart-pounding workout, but no two workouts are ever the same. I love testing my body with each exercise to see how far I can push it.

Image

Boo pullups, boo mountain climbers

Yay jump rope, yay box jumps!

(I have my exercise preferences, of course)

I thought today I’d leave you with an amazing quote I read the other day.

Image

“….The One You Feed”

Personally I have been struggling lately with a lot of these feelings.  That’s the worst, when part of your brain knows it’s absolutely nonsense to feel jealousy/anger/sadness towards people you love, but you just can’t seem to shake the feeling. I know deep down, however, that I am a positive, bright person and my personality from now on will be shaped based on which side of my brain I “feed”. It’s definitely something I’m working on!

Have a beautiful Wednesday! The leaves are changing in my neighborhood and they’ll be gone before I know it, but I’m really enjoying them this year.

Questions:

  • Do you eat sweet potatoes on a regular basis? If so, how do you prepare them?
  • Have you heard this quote about “feeding the wolf before”? What do you think?

Weekend Happenings

Hi, all! How was your weekend? Did you know it was the first weekend of FALL? Crazy!

While I still didn’t manage to do anything too autumn-ish, I know the next month will be filled with apple-picking, pumpkin-carving, candy corn-eating fun, so I’m not too worried.

This weekend I stayed in the suburbs for the first time in awhile.  I had two shifts at the restaurant so it just made sense to stay home. Luckily that meant I got to spend a lot of time with my family and make some great food!

Saturday was a rest day minus a casual walk with my dad through our neighborhood.

Image

Isn’t this apple tree gorgeous??

Sunday was a little different, however. I dragged myself out of bed at 9 and headed to the gym. I spent a lot more time there than usual because I wanted to do both cardio (elliptical) and take a yoga class. My lower back has been kiiiiillllling thanks to the intensity of bootcamp lately so I knew I needed to force myself to stretch!

ImageImage

Needless to say I walked through the door after almost two hours at the gym ravenous and quickly made myself an egg sandwich before church.

ImageEzekiel whole grain english muffin, two eggs with spinach and parmesean cheese, and a Morningstar sausage patty.  Coffee on the side, of course.

The afternoon was spent watching football before heading to the restaurant for work.  I don’t know if it’s just that I’m paying more attention this year, but all the games have been so good! Most of the games I tune into have ended up being close which makes it so entertaining.

Image

Grilled cheese with tomato and an apple on the side before work

I got home late last night thanks to the Bears game (wooooo we won!) so I grabbed the first thing I could find for dinner.

Image

Cherry walnut pancakes that my dad made in the morning alongside a cup of plain greek yogurt (with truvia). I passed out watching reruns of Parks and Recreation before I ate the banana, so there’s that.

This morning before work I’ve already been busy with a KILLER workout at bootcamp.

Image

AMRAPs are nuts (as many rounds as possible). I, along with a few other people around me, were close to throwing up. At the moment you feel like death, but now I just feel like a badass 😉 I’ll spare you the picture of my tomato face afterwards, and instead leave you with a few hilarious posts from “Thug Kitchen”. Is it weird that I find food humor funny?

I hope you all have a great Monday! Happy Fall!

Question: what was the best part of YOUR weekend?

girls night in

I spent yesterday applying for some more full-time jobs in the city, so by the time late afternoon rolled around I was definitely in need of a sweat session.  Luckily my bootcamp has a night class, so  I headed there to get a good workout in.

ImageNot fun.  (But such a blast). yaknowwhatimean?

This workout kicked my but.  Knee raises (reverse crunches hanging from a pull up bar) AND burpees?  Cray cray.

((Sidenote, since I started doing Crossfit-like workouts I’ve noticed that my core is becoming incredibly strong. I love it!))

I ran home and showered really quickly because I had a girls night to get to.

Since we all graduated from college four months ago, my group of girlfriends has worked really hard to still stay close. One of my friends Monica put together a video montage of pictures from freshman-senior year and invited us all over to have dinner and watch it! How sweet!

Image

We all brought over some food (my contribution was the cake batter rice krispie treats in the right corner) and snacked until everyone arrived.

Image

My plate (plus more chips and carrots)

After we all got to Monica’s we settled in and watched the video. It was so sweet and well put-together. Seeing all those pictures was crazy because I can’t believe I was ever that young (but at the same time it feels like I was JUST that young–definitely one of the most bizarre parts about growing up.

Image

Image

After the movie we sat around a reminisced for awhile. It was so nice just to spend a night with my best girlfriends!

Image

The gang minus a few!

This morning I hit the snooze button and missed BOTH workout classes that I was considering going to. Oh well 🙂 I need sleep!  The best part about this morning was that my family was unanimous in wanting bagels for breakfast, so another pumpkin season craving has been satisfied!

Image

Pumpkin bagel with pumpkin cream cheese and coffee with pumpkin coffeemate (not pictured). A little overboard? Not possible.

Now I’m planning on watching college football all day, maybe doing some yoga, and going to work at the restaurant tonight. It’s a beautiful September weekend–fall is finally here!

Question: what’s your favorite kind of bagel? Do you have an Einstein’s Bagel near you or is another place your favorite?

Current Music:

If you haven’t heard Timeflies before, you’re missing out on some serious talent.  This guy is a talented rapper/singer who has his friends put topics in a hat and then he raps about them without knowing beforehand what the topics are. It’s crazy! These are some of my favorite versions of his songs. Not all these songs display this raw rapping talent but if you wanna see that just check more of his stuff out on YouTube.

Current Food:

I did a lot fewer food pictures than normal this week so I have quite a bit to catch you up on!

Image

Quinoa, black beans, avocado, Morningstar chickn patty, bbq sauce, salsa, sea salt and cayenne pepper.

Image

Snacks on the go (I ALWAYS have food in my purse): almonds and carrots

Image

Overnight oats: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 3/4 cup almond milk, chia and flax seeds, 1/2 banana, truvia and cinnamon, all topped with chunky pb!

Image

Tuna salad sandwich, Ezekiel bread, grapes

Image

Plain greek yogurt mixed with truvia and a chocolate Vitatop

Image

Confession…the past week has had a lot of late nights thanks to worries about work and life in general, so I’ve made nachos  twice this week right around midnight (and that’s not including the chocolate chips that have made a permanent residence next to my bed lately). Definitely not the best for me, and I feel it in the morning. Oh well, mistakes happen!

Current Obsession:

I figured I’d rather buy this than end up in the Starbucks drive-thru five times a week for a pumpkin spice latte.  Plus I’m not a huge latte fan when I can just get a nice cup of black coffee.  This just takes coffee to the next level!

ImageCurrent Read: Relish by Daphne Oz

I bought this book a few months ago and after a quick browse I forgot about it. Fail! I really like this book because it isn’t just a cookbook, it has a lot of tips about life in general. I really like Daphne after seeing her on “The Chew”–she seems like someone who has a beautiful, balanced relationship with food.  I highly recommend this book.

The 100 Things Every 20-Something Needs To Realize

Image

http://elitedaily.com/life/the-100-things-every-20-something-needs-to-realize/

LOVE this list. I’m seriously considering printing it out, laminating it, hanging it on my fridge, whatever. It’s just awesome.

A few of my favorites:

  • 13) When you think you’re missing out, you’re not.
  • 44) You should always do your best to look your best because it will make you feel your best.
  • 75) You don’t need to be an assh*le to get ahead in life, but you can’t be a pushover either.
  • 76) Your cellphone is ruining your life.
  • 88) Sudoku helps fight off future dementia. (Great! I love me some Sudoku).

Have a great Friday!

Question: what’s your favorite item from that list?

camped out at starbucks

Hey all!

To say that this week has been stressful is putting it lightly.  I had a *huge* project due at work, so that has taken up the majority of my time (plus serving at night–it’s been a crazy week for my brain). Luckily I just pressed “send” and got it finalized and off to my boss, so it’s a huge weight off my shoulders!

I have the next few days off from the restaurant so I decided to spend the rest of the week downtown. I took the train down last night and was instantly met with a crazy thunderstorm. Like, “umbrellas-turning-inside-out-end-of-the-world” storms.  In hopes of saving my laptop and sanity, I took a cab to meet up Megan for happy hour.

Image

Not the best picture, but I’m sure you all know what beer looks like.  Funny thing is, all throughout college I swore I’d never like beer.  And generally I still don’t. But there’s something really nice about a cold light beer after a long day at work. Plus, in Chicago it’s the cheapest option, and as someone who’s not exactly rolling in the dough now, I can put aside personal preferences for a cheap buzz.

One other fun thing about yesterday? Early morning spin class!

Image

Very few people show up to a 5:30 am spin class. Only us crazies 🙂

Anyway, I woke up today and parked my booty at Starbucks at 9am ready to get this project DONE.  I am one of those people who is easily distracted, so I decided I wasn’t going to take any walking breaks or even look for the best dining options around for breakfast/lunch (like I usually do). I just decided to make Starbucks my home for the day.

Not surprisingly, Starbucks is a great place to be locked up all day! Minus the prices, there were tons of healthy options for me to choose from.

For breakfast I had one of their artisan sandwiches–veggie, egg, and cheese, along with a Venti unsweetened iced tea topped with lemonade.

Image

Loving my new nickname!

Unlike the name suggests, there were maybe two peppers in the whole sandwich, but it was still a good low-sugar high-protein option so it got the job done.

A few hours later I did the obvious and ordered a cup of coffee.  Black with truvia.

Coffee did it’s usual trick of hiding my hunger for awhile, but eventually I was ravenous and needed to take a lunch break.

Image

Since I had a sandwich for breakfast I wanted to try something different.  I got one of their Protein Bistro Boxes. While it looks small, the variety in all the snacks turned this box into a really satisfying meal!  Inside was an egg, a slice of white cheddar cheese, a piece of multigrain muesli bread, a few grapes/apple slices, and a mini packet of Justin’s PB.  Don’t get me wrong, this was devoured in less than two minutes, but it did have a great lasting effect and I’m sitting here three hours later still full.

Aside from the yumminess, it has pretty impressive nutritional stats too:

IMG_2860 Now I’m finished with my work week and ready for a REWARD.  I’m debating between fro yo, a pumpkin spice latte, or hot tub time. Or all the above.  I could be easily convinced.

Question: how do you reward yourself after a hard day/week at work?
