Bea’s Bran Muffins

Bran muffins can be tricky.  Well, muffins in general can be tricky. You never know if you’re biting into a healthy, wholesome snack or a oversized sugar bomb. Sadly, bran muffins are often the worst offenders.  Most recipes contain healthy ingredients like wheat bran, walnuts, and raisins, but often in way too big of portions.

Luckily, my family still has a recipe from way back in the day when my grandma used to make bran muffins.  Original recipecard and all:

Besides being incredibly healthy, these muffins are delicious. Topped with a little honey, they’re just the right amount of sweet and filling.

I love that I can continue to show my late grandma love by baking these muffins. They’re perfect for a light breakfast (if you add some protein and fruit on the side) or a quick snack.


Bea’s Bran Muffins


  • 3 cups All-Bran (cereal)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cup while wheat flour
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

Combine cereal, oil, and raisins and pour boiling water over them (mixture 1).  Set aside to cool.

In a small bowl, combine eggs, buttermilk, molasses.  Add that to cooled mixture 1.

Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt: add flour mixture to cereal mixture 1, stirring just enough to moisten dry ingredients.  Cover batter with plastic wrap and let stand 15 minutes, preferably an hour.

Preheat oven to 400. Bake in greased muffin tins for 20 minutes, or when a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs.

  1. Nothing beats a recipe from a Grandma! Lucky for me, Bran muffins are my favorite! But I try to avoid them because they are usually loaded with sugar and about 400 calories or more! I am pumped to try this recipe! It was so nice of you to share this with us! Thanks! I can’t wait to give this a try in memory of Bea!

    1. Aw thank you Stacy! Yeah, these aren’t mammoth in size the way most bran muffins are. They’re perfect nuggets of deliciousness 🙂 I hope it warms up so you can get your indoor garden started! What a fun idea! I don’t like gardening but I know I’d love it once I got the work done and had veggies, herbs, and flowers that I grew myself.

    I learned to cook steak, pancakes (hungry jack) and mac n cheese (from a box) from my mom. Not really recipes to hand down… They are already printed. On a box.

  6. Oh my gosh, I love that recipe card! Old recipes like that are my absolute favorite. I like browsing through food blogs and Pinterest as much as the next girl, but there’s something way more special (in my opinion) about using a recipe that’s been in your family for ages. As for muffins, lemon poppyseed are my #1. Love, love, love. Well, that or chocolate chip. Mmmm.

  7. These are SO cute! …agreed, most muffins that you buy at the little bakery/ store are quite simply, TOO big!! haha, these look so fun! …and how sweet is that that it’s a family recipe?!! Love that!

  8. LEMON POPPYSEED ALL THE WAY! (as long as there is glaze. Always glaze) My mom has recipes like that. Most of them have oil or some sort of chocolate grazing the surface. At least we know what the recipe calls for each time we make it =P

  9. One of my top baking rules: if it is written on a really old recipe card with scribbled, cursive, slanted writing…it’s gotta be good. Seriously. And the fact that these contain molasses (one of my favorite ingredients) makes them a winner for me!

  10. Grandma recipes are always the best! My grandma knows I think she’s an amazing cook, so for Christmas one year she surprised me with a recipe book of all my favorite meals that she’d make.
