WIAW: turkey burgers and MEGA m&ms

Ahhh what a beautiful morning. I set my alarm for 6am instead of 7am thinking it would give me a nice sense of peace and calm in the morning and boy was I right. The sun is already up (have I mentioned how much I love summer?), coffee is brewing, and I have plennnnnty of time to get you a quality post (something that’s been lacking the past few days).

As I went to bed last night, storms surrounded the apartment and lightning was flashing back and forth all around the skyline. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in awhile. Isn’t it funny how cozy storms are when you’re inside and all set for the night?  But the minute rain strikes during the day I curse the gods. Perspective is a funny thing, isn’t it?

Since I haven’t shared my eats lately I’m going to share a few different meals for my WIAW. I’ve just been making so many yummy things that it would be a shame not to share with my favorite bloggers 🙂

winnie the pooh quotes what is for breakfast

I really think Pooh is onto something. I knew he was my childhood hero for a reason 🙂 Yesterday’s breakfast was a Mexican breakfast burrito complete with two eggs, cheddar cheese, black beans and salsa, all stuffed into a La Tortilla Factory tortilla. So much protein in such a compact breakfast…that gets me excited.

And since I didn’t share pictures from this past weekend I have to show you the brunch I made for Zain and me on Sunday. Eggs, hash browns, and homemade pancakes. I woke up bright and early (10am lol) Sunday morning, biked to Trader Joe’s, got the supplies (and the flowers) and made a nice meal just because. It put me in an amazing mood all day just to have spent some time cooking.

Am I the only one who almost always forgets to snap a picture of my lunch? I’m so good about breakfast, dinner and snacks, but whenever lunch rolls around I’m just like GET IN MA BELLY. This lunch is an exception, though, because it’s a $15 DOLLAR SALAD. It pains me to buy it but sometimes I just crave it. It’s the signature chopped salad from Freshii and includes basically everything but the kitchen sink: field greens, edamame, sunflower seeds, goat cheese, walnuts, dried cranberries, avocado, broccoli, egg whites, salmon and balsamic vinaigrette. Eating this salad is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest, in my opinion. So rewarding.

My favorite lunch this weekend came in the form of what else but a TUNA MELT 🙂 Very few foods get me as happy as a big, gooey tuna melt. Zain and I biked to visit our new apartment in Lincoln Park and found this little diner right next to our new place and decided to stop in. It’s already been decided that this will be our new place after church on Sundays.IMG_7540

And equally as exciting, look what’s next door…

Guys…I’m so excited for how many cool food places there are by our new place! Molly’s Cupcakes is just one of the many options including a Hawaiian fast food place, an empanada cafe, and a Korean BBQ place. My WIAW’s are gonna get so exciting so stay tuned!

I’ve made some great snack discoveries lately (most not so healthy so bear with me). I realize that it looks like I’ve basically been diving head first into the sugar pool all week but I promise I’ve spread it out (not that any of you all judge anyway, you beautiful bloggy saints. You just get me).

Did you know that m&ms come in MEGA size now? Just what I needed….my favorite candy in mega size. Sigh. Thank god one pieces are back in style because food is just getting way too good.

IMG_7553I also made my world-famous chocolate chip cookies for a viewing party of The Bachelorette we went to on Monday (check out the recipe in my Food section, you won’t be sorry!)

Someone was grillling at the Bachelorette viewing party on Monday. One thing led to another and I tried a turkey burger for the first time. Where have these been all my life?! I must have sounded like a crazy person going around the room asking WHO BOUGHT THESE and WHERE CAN I FIND THEM? (Especially considering I only knew three people there. Oh well I’m proud to be “turkey burger girl” if that’s what came out of it). Of course I was too busy scarfing it down to take a picture but I found one online – they’re from Whole Foods!

So many amazing grilling opportunities this summer.

Dinner last night came after a fun run along the lake right before the storm hit. It was really cool watching the sky turn gray and even made me run a little faster praying to sweet baby Jesus that I didn’t ruin my iPhone. (Excuse the selfie but I just got these new Lululemon shorts and had to make sure you approve).

IMG_7641Should I move to Jersey?

Oh right you want to see dinner pics, not my face.

Dinner post-run was baked chicken Parmesan with a side of green beans. I doubled up on the green beans post-picture – I’ve been back to loving veggies lately so I get as many as possible.

IMG_7646Well if you made it all the way to the bottom of this post, you are truly a gem. I hope you all have a wonderful day! Chicago is currently being consumed by fog so it should be an interesting walk to work. Happy Wednesday!

  • Do you watch The Bachelorette? Who’s your pick? I LOVE the farmer!
  • Have you ever had a turkey burger? What do you think?
  • Do you live next to any cool food places that tempt you all day every day?
  • What did you have for dinner last night? Inspire me!

  1. I loooove Pooh!!! Ohh my, your breakfast is amaaazing!! I just came from Trader Joe’s and bought wraps, eggs, beans, salsa, and cheese…it is like I knew you were going to post this!! Horray!! I’m trying this!! CUPCAKES!!! CUPCAKES!!! My birthday is Monday so I’ll treat myself to some!! YUM!! Also, you’re beautiful!! You look fabulous in all of your pictures!!! Gorgeous girl!! Gorgeous girl!! Have a great day!!

      1. Haha, I’m sure it was a beautiful wedding!! Wow, to be married to a precious bear that loves eating honey…you’re a lucky girl!!
Thanks for the birthday wish!! Have a great day!! 🙂

  2. mega M&Ms?! craziness. i’m a peanut M&M girl myself. i plan on watching the Bachelorette and i’m so saddened bc i already can tell that my fave is the guy who passed away. horrible. 😦 i live near a great little pie shop that everyone loves, but i manage to resist stopping in as i pass it every day. had an awesome dinner last night — sushi at the new Tao downtown in NYC. so good.

    1. I love peanut ones too! I don’t discriminate with m&ms – except the pretzel ones. I never got on board with those. A pie shop sounds adorable!! And I know it’s so sad about the guy who passed away he seemed so genuine and kind-hearted 😦

  3. holy storms last night is right!! i stayed up waayyy too late because I was just laying there watching all the lightning. crazy! i had tofu spring rolls from trader joes last night (and pretty much every night this week) AMAZING! and only $2.69 –I’m hooked

  4. Pooh is a genius! What a lovely brunch you made! And fresh flowers are always cheerful 🙂

Dinner last night included guacamole!!! All the other aspects were just a blur in my head… Guac is always the star whatever it is with!

  5. I saw mega M&Ms at Walgreens the other day! I was tempted to buy them, but I’m totally a quantity person when it comes to sweets — I’d rather have 100 mini M&Ms than 10 mega M&Ms, even if they came to the same total volume. Turkey burgers are fantastic! Usually I’ll have a regular burger, but turkey burgers are soooooo good when I’m able to have them.

    1. You’re right haha and the mega ones are dangerous because I still eat the same portions even though each one is probably 3 normal ones. Yikes. Definitely worth trying though! And seriously my mind was blown at how great the turkey burger was!

  6. I briefly watched the Bachelorette and I have to agree the Farmer was so cute! I am sure he is a true gentlemen (hopefully he doesn’t disappoint haha)
I love turkey burgers, although only every once in awhile but they are so good!

  7. Well, you started the post with a title that mentions 2 of my very favorite things ever and then it just skyrocketed from there. HOW MUCH do you love Lincoln Park? So much good food and so much fun. I’m bummed that Yoga Loft might not happen, but CPY definitely will. And I make a MEAN turkey burger. Like, stupidly good. Just sayin. I’ll cook and you can pay me in M&Ms

  8. Yes I love the farmer, too! Woohooo!!! I just finished your post (between catching up on the multitudes of work I have today from playing hooky yesterday) right in time for lunchhh!!!! This all looked so good my mouth is watering haha. The storm was incredible to watch from bed last night…. until my power went out and my phone died mid convo with the BF. I think I’ll live… good thing I didn’t have to wake up crazy early today otherwise I don’t think it would have happened sans-alarm clock.

I am SOOOO excited to spend this whole weekend with you and hopefully get to try different foods and wines that will make an appearance on future posts!

  9. I completely agree that storms at night are nice but during the day they are terrible!

I love the Pooh reading. We used a Piglet and Pooh reading at our wedding so I have a special place in my heart. 🙂

  10. I love that Pooh quote! He is a bear after my own heart …
What kind of glorious cupcakes are those?!
I’m lucky that I don’t have a lot of food places between me and my work. I used to pass a sonic (and a TARGET!) on my way home every day and they both suckered me in all the time!

  11. You’re making us all look bad by being an awesome girlfriend and making your boyfriend a delicious brunch! I guess I’ll have to step up my game lol

Oh and Pooh + Piglet = too cute!

  12. I”m so jealous of your bike to the store! I almost pushed someone off their divvy last weekend because I wanted to be riding so bad : ) Instead we walked to TJ’s. That salad looks amazing (with the salmon) and is totally my kind of lunch! I’ve never been to Molly’s cupcakes but I need to check that out!

  13. 10 am- man, you are epic.

Lauren, just putting it out there- your eats are so damn refreshing because it’s the perfect mix of healthy and balanced- in all areas! and I love the correlation of the salad to mt.everest. Genius. I would rather go vegetarian than watch the Bachelor.

    1. I take that as a HUGE compliment. I try to be as honest as possible 🙂 and I totally think food feats should be up to par with those kind of things…I feel so accomplished when I eat a great meal!

  14. LOVE turkey burgers! They are actually my favorite to eat when I am at home. I find that restaurants can never make them quite as well as my George Foreman can! Also, YES to hashbrowns all day, every day.

    1. I need to invest in a George Foreman – I’m so bad at cooking meat myself, whether it be on the stove or in the oven. And hashbrowns should be their own food group for sure! I used to cover them in salt and syrup when I was little 🙂
