newsflash: I’m not 21 anymore

I haven’t talked to you all since Wednesday and I still feel like I don’t have anything to say. I’m kind of tired of the “sound” of my own voice, if you catch my drift. I do have two recipes to share with you this week so get excited for that!

The past few days can be summed up in one word: beer.

You know what that means. It’s Sunday night and I feel like I’m typing with a preggers belly. All i can say is: thank god for fall layering. Those vests and cardigans really came in handy after day three of being slightly buzzed by Sam Adams Oktoberfest. Woof.

It wasn’t my most shining moment as a proponent of health/fitness. And yeah, I had fun, and no, I don’t regret it. But it never fails that after weekends like this I find myself sitting on the couch Sunday night feeling like a lump on a log and wondering why I couldn’t get it together all weekend.

Thursday night I met up with old friends from my favorite PR internship last year for happy hour at Randolph Tavern in the Loop. We’ve only been able to make it happen every few months but every time we remember why we’re still friends – we’re a freakin’ hilarious foursome. We split a bunch of pork nachos and tacos. So maybe it wasn’t just the beer’s fault (whoops). The restaurant was pretty phenomenal considering we picked it at the last minute.

Friday night was my five-year high school reunion! First of all, is that normal? I showed up to the bar and basically saw the same people I went to high school with except some of the guys actually had facial hair instead of hopeless shadows creeping all over their faces. And even though I will say, without shame, that I was pretty pumped for the reunion, it totally exceeded my expectations. I had a BALL.

I’ve also been wearing the crap out of those booties I shared with you a few weeks ago. If you want a pair, head to Nordstrom NOW. Best purchase I’ve made in years. I was comfortable in them for hours and they only slightly made me resemble a WNBA player.

Saturday was a little rough after reunion night (read: more beer) but I managed to get through work and meet Megan up at a local Oktoberfest celebration. My favorite part was a jousting “arena” that everyone from toddlers to sixty-year-old men was taking part in. I have to say, whenever I go to celebrations like this I kind of wish I had more culture in my life. Minus my quick stint visiting Prague, I haven’t done much to celebratte my Czech roots throughout my life. You Germans and Irish know how to party!

We left Oktoberfest to get some real food at the Mystic Celt and ended up with an incredible view. The only thing better than sitting on a patio in the summer is sitting in the restaurant during Indian Summer when they have the front walls down so you’re basically outside while still sitting indoors. It made for some nice views of the street.

So all in all, I ate and drank and didn’t do NEARLY enough activity to balance it all out. But I have a plan for this upcoming week to get more in control of myself when all I want to do is eat drink sleep repeat. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, fitness-loving Lauren wakes up Monday morning wanting to punch herself in the face. And we all know that when you make a plan and have high hopes for yourself, nothing can possibly go wrong or get in your way. Right? ………………….Right?

No, Lauren, it isn’t fair, but you’re also not 21 anymore. Proper nutrition, water and sleep are a wee bit more important than back in your heyday.

So that’s that. How was your weekend?

    1. I’ll try anything seasonal πŸ™‚ Beer used to never be my first choice but nowadays I definitely have days when I crave it – it’s weird! Kinda like when I was younger and didn’t like coffee but now I can’t imagine my life without it haha.

  1. After Oktoberfest and a birthday dinner Saturday I had a LAZY Sunday. I am definitely feeling you. Also, I didn’t know people had 5 year reunions! And I love those booties.. gotta get myself a pair.

  2. Dude this looks like an epic weekend- you embraced it all and that is what counts! I wish my high school had a reunion…I’d be all over it trying to seewhos pregnant, married, divorced or killing it in the $$$ field.

  3. Sometimes the exact thing we need is what you did this weekend! Party, drink, sleep, eat and SMILE! it sounded like an awesome weekend with memories that will always make you smile, they are the best weekends!
I LOVE you those booties! Been looking for ones like that but can’t find them anywhere! The hunt continues….!
Also my husband David went to Carmel Secondary School in England… Guess it’s probably quite a common school name! It’s also his mums name! Ha!

  4. In your defense, that Oktoberfest beer is THE BEST. I’m glad you had fun at your high school reunion! Mine is coming up in December…. I’ll have to see if I can make it or not…. ANYWAY, glad you had a fun weekend and that the fall layers were able to help a sistah out πŸ˜‰

  5. Hahaha, hey you might not be 21, but thank goodness-that is a good thing. Because then you would just THINK you could get away with everything, and find out later that actually, that would be NO. I had my 5th year reunion a few years ago, and I had a surprisingly good time! It was fun and weird to see how much some people had changed and some people hadn’t.

    1. Haha yeah that’s true πŸ˜‰ I’m realizing this morning that I just can’t hang the way I used to. But in all honesty even in college I was usually home before 1am – girl likes her sleep. Most people hadn’t changed much – just a lot of people pretending they were SO happy with where they were when we allllll know people are going to job hop like crazy for the next few years. But it was a blast!

  6. Hello to you and your awesome weekend!! Woohoo!! You always post such fabulous food pictures and write about such fun times!! I love it!! You’re so cool!! πŸ™‚ So happy for you and your super weekend!! So neat about your 5 year high school reunion!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  7. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of a 5 year HS reunion. Sounds like fun though! You now have a fresh week to balance out your wonderful weekend. πŸ˜‰

    1. I definitely don’t regret it BUT there is a tiny bit of guilt πŸ˜‰ I’m just going to balance it out this week – gotta stop treating Thursdays and Sundays like indulgent weekend days too! That’s my problem. My weekend has been starting Thursday at 5:00 and going until Sunday night haha not a good balance.

  8. glad you had fun, and i think all us fitness gals do it — beat ourselves up afterwards for what we did to our body. but today is a new start to a new week and your plan to rest-eat well-move it move it sounds good, so i hope you are feeling back to your healthy self in no time! all about balance, and sometimes fun means less sleep and less healthy choices…but lots of laughs. πŸ™‚ my wknd was phenomenal: at the lake upstate w/ the fam, full of boat rides and outdoors in the lovely weather here and seeing my bff and her baby (!!) and hanging with the boy. and sooooo much sleep! perfect.

    1. Very true – it’s good to remember that we’re all human and sometimes sleepless nights are necessary to feel like you have a social life haha. You always have the most kick ass weekends! I can’t wait to read all about it πŸ™‚

  9. Ha, I’m so glad my high school only does reunions for major occasions. I’m pretty sure the first one you get is 10? Then after that 25, maybe? idk. What I do know is that if we had had a five year reunion last year, I absoLUTELY would not have gone. Noooo way. I don’t know if there’s a single day that goes by where I actually miss high school, and I’m not in any particular hurry to reunite with all those people I wasn’t really friends with in the first place haha.

    1. Haha yeah if I hadn’t liked high school I would have definitely skipped it. It was just like high school except we could all get into a bar haha. I’m interested to see where everyone will be in another five years – but then again that’s what Facebook stalking is for, isn’t it?

  10. Oy! I vaguely remember weekends like that! Haha. My weekend was way less eventful although the weather was gorgeous and I managed to get a lot of things done! Plus I went apple picking and had a nice picnic with my husband!

  11. Sounds like a great weekend! Sry to hear that you were feeling it at the end of the weekend. I understand completely. I went down to Va Beach for a birthday weekend for a friend. And we also had a blast! Glad I don’t work til Wednesday:)

    1. Yeah luckily I usually have Mondays off so I got to go on a great run and do tons of healthy meal prep so I’m feeling more in control of my week πŸ™‚ I’ve never been to VA Beach but I’ve heard it’s gorgeous– I bet even more so during this Indian Summer.

    1. Whoa talk about a small world!! I wonder if we were anywhere close to the same year. I graduated in 2009 (if you couldn’t already tell from the picture haha). I actually lived in Madison for two years when I was younger too! You guys have the best farmer’s market in the world πŸ™‚

  12. Ha, I’ve certainly had many weekends like yours! Don’t beat yourself up – just move forward with a few less beers and a couple more workouts this week πŸ˜‰ I chuckled at you saying “woof” and immediately thought of Home Alone when he looks at a picture and says, “Buzz’s girlfriend. WOOF.” Not sure if you meant it to be a movie reference, but I quote that movie more often than I care to admit!
